An Ontological Approach to Coaching

  • Women's Resource Center 628 Summit Avenue Greensboro, NC US (map)

Presenter: Joan Evans, Chief of Staff, Cone Health

"I am passionate about helping others to regain the balance in their lives. Our world is too fragile for us not to be focused on how we learn, and how we must change our ontology in order to live more satisfying lives at work, at home, and in our communities."       —    Julio Ollalla, Founder of Newfield Network

Ontological Coachingis a professional practice based on understanding how people function in their personal and professional lives and it examines the different ways people learn, communicate and change. In a broader context, Ontological Coaching addresses the issues that can arise in how people operate within those parameters (learning, communicating and changing) which limit their interpersonal effectiveness.  In this program, we will explore how individuals explore their environment and how each person’s uniqueness creates a different interpretation of events from those around them.

Two important frameworks will be presented:

1. the Observer-Action-Result Model (OAR)

2. the coherence of Body / Emotion / Language (BEL Model) and practice applying these frameworks to coaching. This program will also cover core concepts of ontological coaching:  speech acts, language distinctions, the drift and assessments and interpretations.

Benefits to Coaches Attending:  The Coach in the ontological approach has learned to become a Human Observer, and in that role guides the coachee in learning to become an Observer of their own body, moods, language and emotions.  By doing so the coachee can become more aware and through that awareness make choices that are beneficial to their life goals.  Participants in the program will learn about the frameworks and approaches of this approach to coaching.
