Member Spotlight: Susan Shenberger
1. Can you share a memorable turning point in your personal or professional journey?
A pivotal moment in my career came in 2017, when my son joined my organization as a summer intern. I eagerly volunteered to serve on the Site Planning Committee to help run the intern program alongside an incredible team of peers. Little did I know, this experience would ignite a passion that would change my professional path forever. For the first time, I discovered how much I loved coaching. Working with young talent—watching them grow, embracing feedback, and seeing their confidence build—was energizing. I was hooked.
2. What hobbies or interests do you pursue outside of work?
I am a fitness fan. Prioritizing daily movement is a core part of my approach to maintaining health and well-being. Whether it’s strength training, cardio, yoga, or stretching, I believe staying active is key to living a long, healthy life. I enjoy challenging my body in different ways using the Peloton app and equipment, but the most important part of my routine is consistency.
3. How do you give back to your community or support causes that you care about?
There’s something deeply rewarding about rolling up my sleeves and getting to work. Simply writing a check to support local nonprofits never felt like enough—it didn’t feel personal. I made a conscious decision to show up, be present, and work alongside other volunteers to make a meaningful impact. Whether it's supporting Mitzvah Circle Foundation or The Joy of Socks, being hands-on reminds me that true community support is about connection. Each time I lend a hand, I walk away with a renewed sense of purpose and gratitude, knowing I’ve contributed to something bigger than myself.
4. What are your goals for the next few years?
In 2024, I made the decision to step away from my 20-year career at Pfizer to pursue something more personally meaningful: a calling to help people directly. I realized I no longer wanted a traditional full-time corporate role and instead embraced the flexibility of gig work to focus on making a difference in the lives of others. Today, I split my time across several fulfilling roles—Career Coach, Adjunct Professor, and SCORE Mentor—where I have the privilege of guiding job seekers, students, and small business owners toward their goals. This journey has given me the opportunity to align my work with my values, and I plan to continue this path of meaningful work and service, enjoying the flexibility it brings until my husband retires.
5. What is one book, movie or podcast you recommend and why?
I can't recommend Amazing If highly enough for anyone focused on growth and development. The work of Sarah Ellis and Helen Tupper has been transformative in how I think about careers. Their book, The Squiggly Career, is a must-read for navigating today's ever-evolving professional landscape. Beyond the book, their website and podcast series are rich with practical insights on everything from career progression to building confidence and resilience. I’ve personally found their resources invaluable, and I encourage you to follow them on LinkedIn for continuous learning and inspiration!
