Transitions

Transitions are essential to life

Recently I traveled to Mexico with some friends of mine that I haven’t seen in a long time. I expected this to be a great opportunity to relax and get away from all of the pandemic noise that’s been surrounding us for the past two years. What I came to realize though, as I prepared for the trip and went through the excitement of getting reacquainted with my friends, I was going through my own mini transition of sorts.

You and I know that transition is an ever-evolving circumstance of life. Sometimes we don’t recognize it but other times it’s very apparent.

Time for some Personal Awareness

A key to understanding your own personal transition is through awareness. Sometimes it takes a little personal quiet time to realize the transitions going on in one’s life and other times transitions are quite obvious upon reflection.

Spurred by the boundless enthusiasm of the only deep water diver among us, I was literally dipping my toes into a potentially life endangering activity I’d never done before. It made me a little hesitant and aware that what started out as a quick get together was soon becoming much bigger and deeper than I’d imagined.

Awareness

I had a sense of calm and peace as I learned more about the unknowns involved in this activity. As the certification training progressed, l became more comfortable with identifying things that could go wrong and how to prepare for the worst. We practiced for every foreseeable negative event that could happen and drilled over and over until we were comfortable dealing with the unknown which what is now becoming known.

When the day of the first open water dive came, everything about diving was becoming second nature. I loved it! Without even realizing it I had transitioned into a better version of myself. I had overcome and experienced something that I never would’ve thought possible.

As for the literal transition I went through, it expanded my perspective. To go from breathing in the open air to continue breathing under water (through a tank of course) is really an amazing experience.

Because of my online preparation and training from my expert scuba dive master, there was no fear. When the moment came there was only pure excitement to experience all of the underwater wonders that this new world had to offer.
