Program Overview
The more we discover about the mechanics of emotions, the less we really know about the role of emotions throughout the human brain and psyche (and I do see the two as very different issues). In recent months some new discoveries about the effects of emotions on the chemical reactions on the brain have neuroscientists scratching their heads. It seems reasonable to assert:
Assessing emotional intelligence is as problematic as evaluating cognitive intelligence or mental abilities
Self-assessments of emotional intelligence are unreliable
All models of emotional intelligence are empirically problematic
Emotions contain information which can be identified and constructively used
Each aspect of emotions—subjective, physiological, and expressive can be understood and modified
Emotions, cognitions, and behaviors are interdependent and reciprocal
As coaches and facilitators of individual development, we need to be aware of the empirical evidence related to emotional intelligence and the role of emotions in well-being and personal effectiveness. This seminar will explore some fundamental principles related to emotional intelligence and emotions that aid our work with others.
