1. What inspired you to pursue your current career or passion?
I spent a lot of my early years trying to 'fit in' and 'belong', believing that somehow my best self was not enough. I wanted to help other people get more comfortable with their authentic selves and be intentional about how they were living their lives, instead of always adapting to 'fit in' and 'belong'.
2. Can you share a memorable turning point in your personal or professional journey?
A significant turning point in my personal and professional journey was being trained as an experiential education facilitator at UNCG TeamQuest. The trainers believed in everyone's potential (facilitators and program participants) and were exceptional at expanding my curiosity about people, helping me learn how to create more space for people to show up, and expanding my ability to debrief effectively.
3. What project or accomplishment are you most proud of?
In partnership with I/O psychologists, we created individualized 360 pulse surveys for participants in an 18-month development program. Participants identified 3-5 specific behavioral changes they were focusing on, then identified who in their organization would be able to observe the individual behaviors (mgr, peers, direct reports, business partners). Pulse surveys of the individual behaviors were sent out only to the people who would be able to observe that specific behavior. Participants received very targeted feedback and were able to quickly adapt the new behaviors and increase their effectiveness.
4. Can you share a piece of advice for others in your field?
Coaching and facilitation is so much about preparing the soil and planting seeds, sometimes watering seeds that others have planted. Although we may not get to see the fruit of our efforts, it is so important to do our part well so the fruit can blossom in full when it is ready.
5. What hobbies or interests do you pursue outside of work?
I enjoy flexing my creativity muscle through a variety of mediums including knitting, crocheting, and some basic woodworking. I enjoy jigsaw puzzles (especially Halloween and Christmas themed) and playing board games and card games with family and friends.
6. Who has been a significant mentor or influence in your life?
The most significant influence in my life was my high school track coach. He believed in people and had the ability to help people reach higher than they thought possible. And he never gave up on anyone who was willing to show up.
